Abstract

Terrorism has spread throughout the world and has become a very dangerous phenomenon that threatens the internal security and stability of countries. It impedes all types of development plans. No country, in either the East or West, has been away from this phenomenon.

This research aimed to identify various trends of defining terrorism, its features, aims causes and effects.

The researcher concluded that there is a great disagreement about terrorism, since; there is no comprehensive definition of terrorism, which is agreed upon by countries, or among those who are interested and specialized in terrorism.  In addition, terrorism has certain characteristics, which distinguish it from other crimes. Acts of terrorism are voluntary and deliberate which aim at creating a state of terror and fear, and often stems from a particular ideology linked to extremism and delinquency. Causes of terrorism can be attributed to lack of religious education, ignorance of religion and its requirements as well as religious vacuum among the youth and misconception of promotion of virtue and prevention of vice. It can also be concluded that terrorism is a real danger that is growing and becoming more serious with extremism in all societies, where it is strongly active in the political, security, economic and social agenda at the local, regional and international levels.
